Nearly one million people in Ireland – one in five of us – are living with some form of arthritis. Some 12,600 people are waiting in crippling pain to see a rheumatology consultant, including 455 children. The cost of undiagnosed and untreated arthritis is colossal. But the pain of waiting for adequate rheumatology services is even greater.
People in chronic pain cannot wait any longer. They need urgent action in the first term of the next Government.
Arthritis Ireland is asking every candidate in Election 2016 to support our 100 Day Plan. We are calling for a commitment, within the first 100 Days of the next Government, to the appointment of 100 rheumatology posts.
- 6 Consultant Rheumatologists
- 29 Clinical Nurse Specialists
- 12 Advanced Nurse Practitioners
- 21 Physiotherapists
- 32 Occupational Therapists
You can see where these posts will be located in your area on our hospital area map.
These additional 100 specialist rheumatology posts would cost about €7 million every year. At the moment, arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions cost the State more than €700 million in lost days at work alone. See the Huge Benefits, Small Costs.
Read our 100 Day Plan to find out how these posts will cut waiting lists, improve treatment and save money.
